".ART" graphics format

Hi Everybody,
AOL compresses downloaded images into its own ".ART" format. It is a
graphics format which no one else
converts to another format. Worse yet, AOL does not change the extension
just to create confusion. Believe it or not -- this is the default setting
in AOL.
Unfortunately, WINDOWS XP does not decode this ART graphics format.
Thus, opening an HTM file in Internet Explorer, Front Page, Word, etc. shows
only a box with a red X. However, the path to the file looks perfectly good
since the extension has not been changed !!!
QUESTIONS:
1. Is Microsoft aware of this problem?
2. Will it be corrected in any WINDOWS update in the near future?
3. Will it be corrected when IE 7 appears?
4. Is there any inexpensive third party software to batch file convert ART
to TIF or JPEG?
Thanks for any comments.
Phil
