Hi PA
Either I am not explaining myself clearly using correct terminology or you
have missed/not got all my responses to your questions on 17 June.
My replies/info requested are intertwined/in-line etc

1. Have you neglected to state that you're currently running IE7 Beta2?
Was IE7 Beta2 ever installed?
I.E. 7 - would not touch it with a very long pole - I am not a tester.
2. If you disable all of ZA's "protections", is 916281 offered > by
Windows Update?
Not too sure what you mean by 'disable all ZA protections' - but do not like
the idea of doing that.
Just in case you have missed what I have said before, at the moment I have
ZA set to ask me if WGA can phone home.
I am thinking of letting it have its way later tonight.
If SpySweeper's installed and you disable it's IE and Windows System
"shields", is 916281 offered by Windows > Update?
I do not have SpySweeper.
Do you have any Norton or McAfee applications installed? Spybot or
Ad-Watch?
My security progs are - Netguard, ZA, MS Antispy, Ad-Aware SE Personal,
Spyware Blaster, MS MalSoftware Removal Tool.
3. Are you aware that Automatic Updates has a "Notify Only" > option
(i.e., no updates are downloaded or installed without your permission)?
Yes I am aware - I have said before, I have auto turned off - Notify Only -
have done for 18 months or so. I pick want I want to be downloaded.
4. All of your posting about this would have been more appropriate at
Windows Update newsgroup. For now, let's not get sidetracked over the
order that updates > should be downloaded/installed.
Yes - I did realise that after I had posted, but hoped it would not have
been noticed - now it has been brought to any readers attention ;-) ;-)
When I have more time tonight to concentrate, I think I will allow WGA to
phone home and see what happens.
Thanks for your help etc
I will update

Please confirm: You're running WinXP SP2
Yes
and neither 916281 nor 917344 is offered to the machine at
Windows/Microsoft Update;
No - not exactly.
The following are currently offered for download:
917344
918439
911280
917953
890830{downloaded this one}
914389
916281 for the moment is MISSING{presumed dead :-))}
This is the main reason for holding back at the moment.
If I have read the articles correctly then I believe that the 916281
should be done before 917344?
If so then I will go into MS directly and download.
But I shall still wait to see how these latest ones are effecting other's
systems.
furthermore, neither are installed/found in Add/Remove Programs.
Correct - but this is expected as I have not downloaded and installed any
of the above - yet{sorry one exception}
Last download and update was:
904942 on 31 May 2006 for Win XP
I have downloads hidden but they are all drivers/software I don't need or
use.
Further info - may be material - I have ZA controlling WGA movements, in
or out.
As a side note, did I read months and months ago that these updates
should
be downloaded and installed in the ORDER they are presented and of course
one at a time?

No. I have auto turned off. Have for more than 18 months.
I pick and choose what I want.
As I have said in another group, I have read the link from 917344 to
916281, for an hour or more. I can see they are linked. Well if I
read it correct. There seems to be a couple of days between these two
- I don't know - more confused than ever.
The point for me is that I have not been offered 916281 so I have not
downloaded and installed it. So I read it that I do not need 917344.
Does that make sense to you??
I am tired from four/five hours reading all the stuff in articles and
knowledge bases.
Its bed-time and I have had enough of these Mad Tuesdays.
Good night

Are you waiting for Automatic Updates to kick in and offer you the
latest updates or have you already checked in at Windows/Microsoft
Update to install them?
<QP>
Caveats: Microsoft is releasing this update as a companion to the
update
included with Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-021: Cumulative
Security Update for Internet Explorer (916281). We recommend that
you install this update at the same time as that update as a
security update in that
bulletin could expose this vulnerability or cause application
compatibility issues.

Once again it appears that MS is creating probs all round with<blither snipped>
the
latest batch of updates.
I have been reading through the windows.update and I can see from
that
there are problems with KB917344(MS06-230.
I have this one on current offer.
What is confusing is the knowledge base refers back to KB916281,
which
appears to have been on offer a few days ago, with a suggestion
that this is installed along with KB917344.
But I have not had the offer of 916281 in the last few days.
916281 is also causing probs for some.
So, is 917344 and patch/fix for the 916281 or what.
