Re: Turn off Simple File Sharing

That entry in Folder Options doesn't exist in Windows XP Home
Edition. As I pointed out in my earlier response, Simple File
Sharing cannot be disabled in XP Home Edition. The instructions
you're trying to follow don't apply to XP Home Edition.

What you're looking for is a way to access the Security tab on
the folders Properties sheet. Just boot into Safe Mode with an
account that is a Computer Administrator. Right click the
appropriate folder. The Security tab should now be available.
Make your changes and reboot. Check the folder to see if the
appropriate users have access.

Good luck

I am trying to set permissions for files on a pc running

simple folder view in Explorer's Folders list".

Windows XP Home Edition uses Simple File Sharing by
default. It cannot be disabled. The instructions you're
trying to follow only apply to XP Professional.

In order to access the Security tab on your XP HE system
you'll have to boot into Safe Mode. To start in Safe Mode,
reboot your computer and
start tapping the F8 key as soon as you see anything
displayed on the screen. Keep hitting F8 until the
Advanced Startup Options menu appears. Use the up and down
arrow keys on your keyboard to select Safe Mode. Hit Enter.

I hope that the folders you're looking to restrict are
ones you created. If not, I'd suggest you leave them
alone. Making folders private is a far better approach
than changing NTFS permissions.

Good luck
