Re: Turn off Simple File Sharing

Then you should be fine. Just remember to boot into Safe Mode whenever you want to make adjustments to the permissions.

One suggestion I'll pass along is to always leave the Administrators group with Full Control. If you need to restrict access by a user who is a member of this group then maybe they shouldn't have an administrator account.

Good luck

Good advice. Even in XP Pro it amazes me that in certain folders don't have Administrators granted full control. When you go messing with permissions it's always a good idea to pay close attention and really understand what you're doing.

Yes, they are folders I created, for the purpose of file

I am trying to set permissions for files on a pc running xp
home addition with sp2. I'm trying to follow the
instructions to turn off "simple file sharing", and cannot
see the setting "use simple file sharing" check box, in
Folder Options. The closest thing to it is "Display simple
folder view in Explorer's Folders list".

Windows XP Home Edition uses Simple File Sharing by
default. It cannot be disabled. The instructions you're
trying to follow only apply to XP Professional.

In order to access the Security tab on your XP HE system
you'll have to boot into Safe Mode. To start in Safe Mode,
reboot your computer and
start tapping the F8 key as soon as you see anything
displayed on the screen. Keep hitting F8 until the Advanced
Startup Options menu appears. Use the up and down arrow
keys on your keyboard to select Safe Mode. Hit Enter.

I hope that the folders you're looking to restrict are ones
you created. If not, I'd suggest you leave them alone.
Making folders private is a far better approach than
changing NTFS permissions.

Good luck
