Java Runtime Environment Update -- and Malware(?)

I may have just made a big mistake, by permitting Java to update on my
machine. It has been swamping my bandwidth for over an hour now, but more
scary, I see that DoubleClick and AKAMAI appear to also be riding on the
download. (This observation is from monitoring Netstat.)

Has anyone else had a similar experience, or can anyone shed any light on
what is going on?

Thank you very much,
David
