More messed up icons

I'm running Windows XP Professional (with Service Pack 2) on my
computer and I'm having a few problems with icons, namely image icons.
When I first started using the computer (it was originally my dad's),
all the icons were as they should have been. Most image files (JPEGs,
GIFs, and BMPs to be exact) were associated with Microsoft Office
Picture Manager, which I saw as being perfectly fine. A short while
later, I installed Paint.NET and JPEGs and GIFs became associated with
that. The main problem here is that suddenly the icons were gone,
leaving only the default icon image for all image files, even the ones
left untouched by the Paint.NET installation. In other words, JPEGs,
GIFs, BMPs, and PNGs all display the default icon instead of the MS
Office Picture Manager icons, which I reassociated all image files with
after I discovered this. Apparently the reassociation didn't do
anything, so I checked the file types under Folder Options and all the
icons/file actions were correct, yet the icons still don't show up. Is
there any way to fix this and get the icons to display how they're
supposed to? I've already tried rebuilding the icon cache several
different ways using both TweakUI and TuneUp Utilities 2006 with
nothing to show for it.
