RE: Machine shuts down when you select restart?

Hi Scott ,

I have following suggestions to narrow down this issue:

Step 1:
=======================
If they belong to a domain, to narrow down the root causes, please help me
confirm if the issue only occurs on the specific user profile. You may try
to logon with other domain user profile and then shutdown the computers to
test the issue. If the issue persists, it may be related to OS, please go
to step3. If the issue does not exist, it may be related to user profile,
so please go to the next step.

Step2.
============
Please try to logon with the problematic user profile on other Windows XP
clients to see if the issue happens. Meanwhile, you also may create another
new user profile to test:
1. Log on as the Administrator or as a user with administrator credentials.
2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3. Click User Accounts.
4. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Advanced.
5. In the left pane, click the Users folder.
6. On the Action menu, click New User.
7. Enter the appropriate user information, and then click Create.
8. Logon with the new user account to see if the issue occurs in the user
profile.

Step3.
============
I suggest we restart the computer in Safe Mode to see if the problem also
occurs in this mode. Safe Mode loads a minimally protected-mode
configuration, disabling Windows device drivers and using the standard VGA
display adapter.

1. Restart the computer.
2. Keep pressing F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears.
3. Choose the Safe Mode with Network, and press Enter.
4. Please shutdown the computer to test.

Note: Some third party applications and some hardware device cannot be used
during Safe Mode. You will temporarily be unable to connect to the Internet
temporarily while in Safe Mode.

Step 4:
=============
Run "shutdown -r" in command prompt to see the results.

Step 5.
============
If the problem persists on the situations above, I will suggest you
temporarily unplug the network cable, and then logon locally with local
administrator user account to test the issue again.

Additional, I have found the following articles that maybe helpful to
troubleshoot the shutdown issue:

308029: Resources to help troubleshoot shutdown problems in Windows XP

Also thanks Frank for the link, you can have a look.

Have a good day.

I have an XP machine that when I select Shutdown and Restart, it just
shuts
down and does not restart.

What gives?

Thanks,
