Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry
Control Panel (Classic View), Sounds & Audio Devices - when
the details box opens, click the "Audio" (TAB). For Default device
what is shown in the box ? If no entry is shown then your device is
not detected and may have gone to a Phantom status.
Also, have you opened/expanded the full mixer and made sure the
Wave/Master volume sliders mute check boxes aren't checked.

The volume on my computer completely dissapeared. I checked...it's not on
mute, the speakers are plugged in, the volume is high. Please help! I
don't
know what to do.
