One thing to try. When you turn on your Compaq you should get a very
brief chance (1 or 2 seconds) to choose an item from the Boot Menu -
either normal startup or recovery console.

Choose the Recovery Console option. When prompted for the
Administrator password just press the Enter key unless you have
configured a password for the built-in Administrator account. This is
different from your normal user account with Administrator privileges
so unless you have specifically configured a password it should still
be blank.

When the system finished booting and stops at the C:\> prompt enter
the following command:

CHKDSK C:\ /R

If your boot failure is due to damaged data on the hard drive then
this may fix it. There are many other possible causes for your
problem, but this is about the only one that you can use in this
circumstance with your Compaq machine because of the limited repair
and recovery options that Compaq provides.

The last restort option would be to use the Compaq System Recovery
procedure which will do a total "nuke and pave" of your hard drive,
wiping out everything on it and putting in a fresh copy of Windows
exactly as it was when it left the factory.
