Re: why is sharing the root of a drive so bad?

There is nothing wrong with sharing the root drive. In fact if you
have XP pro you have a default root drive share of "C$". It's just
another annoying Microsoft prompt.

People might say that you could get viruses or some hacker might hack
into your root drive... Wah wah... you could get hit by a bus too and
the chances of being hit by a bus are far higher...

I have set up a network for my home office, and all works fine.

I would like to share files by just giving access to the data I keep on a
"W:" drive (where "W" stands for "Work"), so that I can access any files on
that drive from any PC on my network. Every time I try to do this, I get a
warning asking me if I really want to do this, and do I understand the
risks of sharing the root of a drive.

In the context of a home office (though obviously I do take the laptop out
with me), is this something I ought to be worried about, or could I just go
ahead and do it? It would be neater than having all the directories as
shared.
