which app - office or other, you try and open a file, windows gets
stupid for a few seconds while thinking about doing what you want -
you know this stupidity is occurring when you see the tiny
application icon in the extreme upper left corner of the active
window change to a dummy DOS box during this period of confusion.

What crap - talking about Vista? Holy Crap - fix what's out there
now - don't worry about freaking Vista! FIX FREAKING XP!!!!!!

The symptoms you experience are not the experiences of other XP users. Your
XP installation CD may have suffered a hiccup during manufacture or there's
something -- aside from XP -- amiss in your machine.

One woman, when attempting to prove the existence of UFOs, said to Isaac
Asimov: "It's got to be a UFO. What else could it be?" To which Asimov
replied: "Madam, your ignorance is not proof."

So, I suggest, instead of blaming XP, let's find out "what else" it COULD
be.

Next time your system hangs, right-click on the task bar and pick Task
Manager. Actually SEE what is eating the CPU cycles or what is running. You
may have a malware application trying to open a forbidden web site, your
computer may be trying to open a directory on a not-connected network
computer, or any of a dozen other possibilities which, though rare, are
considerably more likely than a mispressed distribution CD.
