We were working from a copy of the original XP CD. Cleaned the copy,
tried again, no go. Popped in the original, which is also spotless -
no luck. I could swear I've run across this problem mentioned
elsewhere, but I can't seem to come up with the solution. PITA
computers. Can you imagine if hammers behaved this way? We'd still be
living in caves or mud huts.

In most cases, a failure to copy files from a CD is due to smudges or
fingerprints
on the surface of the CD itself.
Examine the Windows XP CD and make sure it is absolutely "pristine
clean"
with no scratches, fingerprints or smudges. Use a mild non-ammonia
based household cleaning solution and a soft cloth to clean it.
While you should always check the cd for dirt, scratches, maybe if it is
a bad burn, in most cases failure to install an operating system is due
to faulty hardware. Start testing the RAM, the cd drive, and then the
hard drive.
