All settings are default or set by SPD. I am not really a tweaker, I just
like my stuff to run stable :) It is an MSI 915GCombo motherboard (socket
775) with a celeron 2.66 CPU. The RAM is Kingston KVR 512MB. Hard Drive is
Seagate 80GB P-ATA. Optical is liteon DVDRW.
I have tried failsafe in the BIOS no changes, as well as optimized, and
custom settings. I have replaced the floppy drive (found it to be failing),
and tried OCZ 1GB Dual Channel Kit RAM (2 x 512MB). With the OCZ RAM (new)
it told me the memory was either not matched or faulty. With only one piece
of OCZ (either one) it returns the same error as with the Kingston RAM. I
have also tried replacing the IDE cable with both a 40 wire (did not boot at
all) and another 80 wire. I have tried this with the hard drive and optical
drive on one cable on the primary IDE port on the mainboard as well as
different combinations using the IDE RAID ports (when I had them enabled and
got the floppy drive to work). I have received a few minor differences in
the technical information but have been unable to get to the windows setup
screen even. I even changed the power supply from an older 20 pin one to a
new 24 pin one, and also tried a different hard drive.

I am running out of ideas.

I appreciate that you are responding to my post. If you read what I wrote
however, you will notice that I said I made floppies from the CD and not
that
I tried to use the CD for the drivers. I am well aware that XP setup will
not take drivers from anywhere except a floppy disk at this time.

I have since been in the BIOS and disabled everything that was not
absolutely necessary to run the computer. (IE: hyperthreading, USB,
onboard
network, RAID) I am still getting the stop error. It has changed
slightly
though. now the technical information reads:
STOP: 0x000000ED (0x8239f7d8,0xc000010,0x00000000,0x00000000)

Not sure if this will help any, but I hope so as this is getting extremely
annoying.

something several of us have been fighting with MS about for a number of
years. This may be changed with Vista, but that's not going to help you
right now.

I never enable BIOS level virus protection. I re-install too often for
that.
However, I did go check to verify that it was off in this case as well.
BIOS level virus protection is disabled. I have also been checking
through
responses to others that had the same question. A lot of the answers
involve
booting to the CD and running recovery console to do a CHKDSK. I
cannot
even
get it to boot to the Welcome to setup screen from the CD in order to
choose
the recovery console. I can press F6 to install SCSI/RAID drivers, and
if
I
try this (which is supported by my motherboard, but not in use) it just
keeps
asking my for the floppy with the drivers on it. It will not recognize
the
floppy that came with the mainboard, or any of the ones I made from the
CD
(instructions were provided on the CD). It never gets any further than
this
either. Just past this is the point at which I get the error. Nothing
more
I can do. This is kinda frustrating on a 6 month old computer.

Anything anyone could tell me that I could try would be appreciated.

Check the BIOS for antivirus detection settings and disable them. They
preclude setup from writing to the mbr which it normally does during
setup.
Once installed, it can be reenabled.

I am getting this error when I try to re-install Windows. I can boot
to
the
existing copy of Windows just fine. I would like to format and
re-install
or
install to a different hard drive (both options are available to
me).
The
technical information displayed is:

There have been no hardware changes made (except when I tried a
different
hard drive). I am using an 80 wire IDE cable. If more information
would
be
helpful, I can give a complete list of the hardware I am using.

Any help would be appreciated.
