log on screen and password box

I have only one user account on WinXP Home system and it has always worked
in a way that when I log on, the password field is automatically open so I
can just type my password and log in.
All of a sudden. I started getting the "X unread mails messages" and the
password field was closed: I had to click on my name and enter it.
My default mail client is Outlook 2003. I don't use any other and I have not
even set up accounts for Outlook Express. I checked and double checked my
Outlook mails and I do not have any unread mail. Where does this message
come from?
So I used TweakUI and deselected the option "show unread messages on log
on". Now there are no messages showing, but my password field still is
closed, and I have to click it to open.
Is there a way to revert to the way it was working before? I hat having to
click on my name before being able to type in my password.
Thanks
