Thanks all - sorry for the incomplete post to begin with.
My laptop is the Latitude X1. I am also now thinking that I need to
confirm that it is actually a bios password that I need to reset.
The short version of a long story is that the computer was set up by
the tech department of my old (now defunct) company. I have assumed
that all this time I was dealing with a bios password.
What I see when I start up is a very brief (1 sec) splash screen
similar to what I get when I start up my other desktop machine. It is
then replaced with a grey and white screen stating that my computer is
protected by a password system....... and that i will need a user or
administrators password to proceed.
As I say, I had assumed that this was a bios pasword but now realize
that it may not be a correct assumption. If it does not sound like a
bios password then I wonder if any one would hazard a guess as to what
type of system it is and where it would "live" if I wanted to get rid
of it.
As I noted in my orignial post it is not critical for me now as I know
what the password is but at some point I may want to sell this machine
and I expect the new owner would like to not have to deal with this.
Thanks again.
Scott
