Hi,
Because by default WinXP wants everyone to use passwords. See also this:

In an attempt to follow another posted thread here in this NG where
someone was asking how to log on automatically , I clicked on User
Accounts in C.P. which brings up a page which , under "PICK A TASK"
there is a choice entitled "Change the Way Users Log on or Off"
If this is clicked , I get to a page with two choices :-
1.Use The Welcome Screen
2. Use Fast User Switching
However, if I type "CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2" Into the RUN dialogue
after clicking START , I am brought to another User Accounts page
which has 2 tabs :- USERS and ADVANCED and , under the USERS tab
there is now the choice givenn to check the line " Users must enter a
password to use this Computer"
From my understanding of a post in this NG entitled "How to log on
Automatically " - ( I think that was the title , perhaps not exactly
those words ) - it would appear that this option to click on the line
" Users must enter a ......etc " is available merely by going into
C.P.> User Accounts>Change the way user log on or off> when this
choice would then be available.
I don't get that choice on my PC - that route merely brings me to the
2 choices detailed above.
Why is it necessary for me to have to type " CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2"
into the RUN in order to get this choice ?
B.N.
