Re: Explorer.exe crashes when performing traditional windows search

Hi,

The explorer.exe process crashing when attempting to use the classic Windows
Search (default OS search feature) on WXP SP2. I have the full MSN Search
Toolbar + Windows Desktop Search installed (v. 2.05.0001.1119). Sure, I could
just use the Desktop search feature, expect for those cases where I need to
search for a file not indexed by WDS, or a file that I _just_ misplaced, or
when someone else uses my PC and chooses not to use WDS.

Regardless of how I try to use the classic Windows search, it always fails
on the first attempt (after a fresh boot). The result is always the same,
regardless of which PC I use (even in my Virtual PCs!) -- explorer.exe
crashes ("Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting
module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00000000." - not very
helpful) & Windows complains about Data Execution Prevention (DEP) being the
cause of having to close this process.
a. Start menu, Search -- explorer.exe immediately crashes
b. Open Windows Explorer or My Computer, click on the Search magnifying
glass icon -- same result
c. Windows key + 'F' -- still the same result

I have since then uninstalled the msn search bar, and the windows desktop
search and had no success correcting the issue. Is there a fix? Is there
bad registry data that I need to remove in order to correct the problem???

thanks ahead for any assistance.

Matt.

Open Explorer and go to the Windows\inf folder. Locate the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and
select Install. You'll need your XP CD or the files from the i386 folder. (This fix will require
you to have your Win XP CD).

The Windows\inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer Folder Options (View
tab) to Show hidden files and folders. You can also click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\inf

.
