I have tried what you suggested, but in the instructions on setting up a
microphone there is this:

Only there IS NO Speech Recognitioin tab!!

Should I contact Dell? Have they missed out a bit of the installation?

I bought a (very cheap) microphone to use on my Dell, but it didn't
work,
so
I bought a more expensive one from Maplins - still no joy. I plugged in
at
the front, and then I plugged it in at the back which did at least
produce
a
response from the machine which asked me to confirm it was a mike. I
tried
the control panel, but the tester reports it can pick up nothing at
all.
What am I missing here?
