Actually, you don't buy any piece of software, you just buy a license
to use it on a particular computer. If the hardware has changed, the
software can't tell whether you have just upgraded the original
computer or installed it on a second machine.
Personally I think Microsoft makes enough money that they shouldn't put
people to all this trouble. Most people never upgrade a computer or
install Windows on another one, so the amount they lose by copying is
probably only a small percentage of their vast profits. Most shareware
authors, who need the money more than Microsoft, don't take such steps
to enforce installing on a single machine because they know that many
users won't buy software that employs hardware locking. But for most
software, you have a choice. The only choice you have, if you don't
want to use Windows, is to use Linux, which isn't something most people
want to do.
