Hi all,

I looked through the posts looking for answers to this, and though it
seems
lots of people have the same symptoms, there has been no simple good
answer
yet....

I have my updates set to download but not to install without my ok,
the
yellow shield appears on the system tray, but when it finishes, it
disappears. When I choose to Shut Down, the update shield is sitting
on the
Shut Down option saying it will install and then shut down the
machine...
though there is an option to shut down without installing the
updates... I
am unable to find a way to see what updates MS wants to install.

This is happening on all of the XP Pro machines at my school... how
do I
access this so I can preview what updates it wants to install and
either
check or uncheck the ones I want?
Easy solution - turn updates off *ALTOGETHER*.

Take control of your machine and *YOU* decide
a) what updates to download
b) when to download them
c) when to install them.

Having said that, "all of the XP Pro machines at my school" could mean
that if the computers are networked througout the school, any Sys
Admin worth his/her salt would have this update option unavailable to
general users ... and you might not be able to control "your" machine.

ASCII a silly question, get a silly ANSI
well, thanks.. that might be a solution to the "problem", but not an
answer to the question... can you answer the question?

Replied and answered - you are asking (telling) MS to download the
updates and install them later - this option does NOT offer you the
choice of what updates to install, it's doing what you've set it to do
: d/load (ALL) the updates but install later. Nowhere in this option
is there any mention of you wanting to, or MS allowing you, to choose
which updates to install.

If you check any of the options available (right click My Computer ->
Properties -> Automatic Updates, none of them let you choose which
updates to install - except the last because it is all done manually.

Really? Yesterday, AU downloaded all the updates, I chose only to install
one of two, told it not to inform me of this update again and then merrily
installed the one I wanted.

Alias

and this is how mine usually acts also.. usually being the operative word
there... the challenge I was having was the yellow shield disappeared after
the download finish (I'm assuming), and when I went to shut down, there was
a shield over the Shut Off icon, which I avoided, shutting down without
installing any updates... after 3 more reboots... the shield finally came
back to the system tray and I then chose the updates I wanted and let it
install just as you did... so the problem is no longer, but my question
still remains... if it happens again, is there a way to access the updates
in order to chose which ones to install, (the already downloaded ones of
course) THAT was the original question... ;)

if anyone can answer THAT question, please do...

thanks,
niteowl
