They now insist that there is no trace of the software on my system. However, the Norton Antivirus will not install and says that I must fist uninstall McAfee Security Suite 2005.

I am at a total loss as to what to do now.

You probably need to reformat. Get Avast, http://www.avast.com/, a free AV that is rated higher than those two. I would stay as far away from McAfee and Norton as you possibly can.
