Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Tena;
Contact Gateway IMMEDIATELY.
No one else can help you since your Product Key seems to have changed.

What does your CD say?
More importantly what does your invoice say about the operating system?

Background: The LCD on my Gateway laptop
went out. I had 30 days left on my warranty, so I sent the laptop
away (to Gateway) for repairs. By the time it was returned, there
were only a few days left on the warranty. At the time I sent it to
Gateway, I had XP Pro (preloaded when I bought the laptop). When I
started up the laptop for the first time, I noticed right away that
Gateway had changed my OS to Home Edition. A quick peek at the
bottom of the laptop revealed that the hard drive was switched out
and where the MS sticker used to say "XP Professional" it
now said "XP Home Edition."

What I did next was against the EULA because I tried using a version
of XP Pro that was installed on a desktop currently in use. I
already got my hand slapped and I am embarrassed -- so please no
chastising!

[b:11c451e2a7]Current Problem[/b:11c451e2a7]: I contacted MS and
after slapping my hand, they told me that a deinstall of XP Pro could
be done -- or at least I was given the impression this could be done
because they transferred me to Tech Support. Because of a bad phone
connection, I postponed calling them (I was out of town this
weekend) until I returned home. I haven't called for fear of being
charged out the wazoo. I'm hoping someone here may be able to help
me out.

I understand from reading archived threads that you CANNOT install
Home Edition over Pro, but since Home Edition was there, can I
"deinstall" Pro and bring my OS back to Home Edition?

If I can't do this, do any of you have solutions? I know the obvious
is to buy a whole new OS. I REALLY need assistance here. If
additional information is needed, please ask and I'll answer any
questions you may need answered in order to help me out!

Thanks from Michigan!

Tena
