After updating Windows XP Pro on 4/29/06, my computer boots up to run
scandisk utility which I ran. The computer still boots up to run
scandisk and when I select to not run scandisk each time, the computer
will boot to the user sign in and another dialog message box saying
"The file or Directory
\Windows\csc\csc0.temp is corrupt and unreadable". I click "enter"
twice, once to log in and second to say ok to the corrput file. Then,
I can run Windows OK.
What can I do to have the computer boot up normally without this
problem?
1. XP doesn't use Scandisk. It uses Chkdsk.
2. See this MS Knowledge Base article:
Chkdsk Runs Each Time That You Start Your Computer [Q316506] -
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316506
3. Make sure your hard drive is healthy. Download a diagnostic utility
from the hard drive mftr.'s website. Create either a bootable floppy or
cd with the file you downloaded and boot with that media. You may need
to change your computer's boot order in the BIOS. Do a thorough test
with the diagnostic utility. If the drive has any physical errors, boot
into Windows, back up your data, and replace the drive.
