Programs are missing in Add or Remove

I am trying to help a friend who is using Win XP Home to remove some of his
programs. When we go into Control Panel, Add or Remove, there are only five
programs listed, however he has over 20 programs installed on his computer.
How can we get the rest of the programs to show under Add or Remove, so that
we can remove the one that we want? Also he has been doing update from
Microsoft and none of the are shown even though we have show updates
checked.
