Hi Wesley,
Many thanks for the very swift reply....i posted the message on 47 boards in
total (just kidding, was only 3 - thought that different people monitered
different boards so maybe I would get some different suggestions :-)
Anyway, I tried your suggestion and it didn't work I'm afraid...it was the
kind of problem that really bugs me so I was just about to restore my
previous image from Acronis which I knew worked, when I thought i'd try
creating a new profile and copy over my documents etc and delete the original
profile from the PC. All is working as it should...so far. The desktop
icons stay in place even when clicking refresh!!
So, obviously something on my profile itself was a bit screwed...would you
be able to advise what that could be so in future I might be able to fix it
please?
Thanks again..
Nick (just one post for the reply...i'm learning ;-)

How many places did you Multipost this to?.
If Lock Web Items on Desktop is checked...
Items can be moved, but they are moved back after reboot.
Right click Desktop | Arrange Icons By |
UNCheck: Auto Arrange
[[Arrange the icons in columns along the left side of your screen.]]
UNCheck: Lock Web Items on Desktop
[[Specifies whether Web content windows or items that you have placed on
your desktop are locked in place and can’t be moved. Select the check box to
lock Web content in place. Clear the check box if you want to be able to
move Web content.]]

Hi..
I've got a little problem with my desktop settings. I keep my icons in
custom positions and every time I reboot or refresh my desktop, they
revert to 'auto arrange' and I then have to reset them using 'Desktop
Restore', a handy little freeware utiltiy.
This is a very fresh reinstallation of XP on a formatted partition and
previous to this, my desktop icons stayed in the same position on
rebooting (though occasionally I had to use 'Desktop Restore on a couple
of occasions after a desktop refresh) so I can't understand why they
change back after every reboot.
I would be grateful if someone out there could let me know how to overcome
this please...is there a registry tweak i can use to 'lock' my icons into
position regardless of reboots/refreshes???
Many thanks in advance...
