Re: How do I repair WindowsXP (esp Internet Explorer?)

This is a nightmare!

My IBM Thinkpad laptop appears to have some sort of damage (??).
The evidence is for this is

1. that when I attach my iPod to the PCMCI slot (ie a USB 2.0
connection) it crashes
after a while. And when it does so it COMPLETELY kills windowsXP stone
dead (esp whenever it has to copy a large file -e.g. my PST file!)
The iPod works fine and reliably on the old USB1 port however.

2. I can't get the CD-reader to work at all on my ThinkPad.

But how can I "Repair" the WindowsXP Pro installation?!

I now fear that the disk has become slightly corrupted by the "sudden
deaths" by
the (above) USB2.0 induced crashes - and that this has corrupted some
key
WindowsXP .DLL files (etc).

The PC is slow but seems broadly stable.
One critical problem is that I cant get Windows Upgrade to work - not
at all.

In desperation I have tried UNINSTALLING "SP2", and with a view to then

reinstalling it. The uninstall seems to have worked and I rebooted okay
back
to MS Explorer 6 (whereas I did have Explorer 7 installed -again out of
desperation!)
I have managed to dowload a huge file called
"WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe" which is about 266MB (!!) and I am
very much
hoping that it will over-write any corrupted or missing .DLLs.

(It's taking one HECK of a long time to do so mind you!)

Meanwhile I had previously found a "\i386" directory in my C: drive
root.

But when I tried to run from a CMD window
"\386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons"
(in order to try to Repair my Windows XP)
it then came back moaning that it couldn't find the file
"C:\i386\WINNTUPG\NETUPGRD.DLL"

I'm still waiting for the 266MB "SP2" file to install itself
- But am I on the right lines?

P.S. I would have been tempted to use the utility that IBM ThinkPad
proved
to format the disk and start again, however on reflection that would be
a TOTAL
nightmare - particularly negotiating with Microsoft to tell them that I
had to
trash my ms Office2003 and start again - plus similar problems with
Adobe/Macromedia
Dreamweaver... Plus I would lose all my password defaults, and of
course all my
network connections that have taken months to get right for the 3
different offices
that I work in... Aaaaargh!
