I downloaded and looked at the manual that came with your computer and it
really doesn't help much other than telling me that the mic jack is the
middle of the three jacks on the front of you machine.

Some systems have a checkbox for Mic boost in the Microphone recording area
of the sound manager. Have you checked for this?

When you plug in the microphone can you still record using the onboard
microphone? If this is the case, it looks like the system may be bad
(microphone switch). If it does cut out the onboard microphone, the
microphone is bad or there is still a setting somewhere in Windows or in the
bios that needs to be changed.

If all the other things have been accomplished, and you know that the
microphone is OK I'm out of options myself. Looks like it is time to call
Acer's tech support.

ive done the basics, made sure the phone isnt muted, set up audio
properties,etc.
im using the mic port, the phones port comes thru ok and the line in port
is
vacant.
the earphones switch but the mic does not.

Most computers automatically start using the headphone jack and switch
off
speakers when the headphones are plugged in. The microphone jack does
the
same thing on most computers.

You may look at the Sounds and Audio Device Properties in the Control
Panel
for any settings and you can also look in the Volume Control settings.
Right Click on the speaker Icon on the system tray. (Left) Click on Open
Volume Control. When Master Volume shows click on Options. Click on
Properties. Click on the Recording radio button and then click on any
"Show
the following volume controls: that are not checked and then click on OK.
If your "front jack" is really a line in device port you will need a
preamplified microphone. If it is a true microphone port, you need to
make
sure the volume control is up. Make sure that the Microphone in the
Playback is not muted also.

And it should be "speech recognition tab" and not "voice recognition
tab".

the system uses the built in laptop microphone. and i dont know how
