Re: odd Windows Explorer crashes

I tried using Windows Search Assistant again, as a test, searching for exe
files on my computer. When it stopped I randomly scrolled up and down the
list of files, and it's then that Explorer collapsed and rebooted. So I
found a registry hack to remove the Search Assistant (and a way to reverse
my change), and repeated the experiment. Again, Explorer crashed. So I
checked the Event Log, and the only error message that seems to coincide
with the restart was this:

"The description for Event ID ( 4 ) in Source ( SentinelProtectionServer )
cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry
information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer.
You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description;
see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the
event: ."

The problem is, this "Sentinel Service" is part of a software that I use
which employs the use of a hardware "dongle" device to protect against
fraud. Without it, my software will only run in "trial" mode. Nonetheless I
have disabled the service both in Services and MSconfig, and this time
Explorer hasn't crashed...so far. I can't understand, though, why such a
software would interfere with something as harmless as the Search function.
Explorer doesn't crash if I scroll the contents of any other file or folder.

I can't understand your attitude to SP2. There are a number of security
fixes as well as other fixes. You might find it fixes your problem You
really should get it. As to your crash look at the software you have
loaded
at the time it crashes. Also look at the services (other than Microsoft)
and
disable the non Microsoft ones to see if you can track down the component
that's causing the crash. Go to start | run and type msconfig and look at
both the startup tab and the services tab and remove all from the startup
tab. Disable the non Microsoft services. See if the computer is stable and
if so restart a few items at a time until you find the problem. Also run
hijack this which generates a log to see if any malware is causing the
problem. Also look to any toolbars and so on and include them in your
faultfinding. Do you run any registry fixing programs?

Please repost if you find the fault

Having just used Google, I found an article claming that if you add
anything
other than QuickLaunch to the taskbar, it can crash. I have Control
Panel
and the Address Bar added to the bar as well as QuickLaunch...should I
remove them? Seems daft seeing as how I'm only using Explorer like it's
supposed to be used!

Every now and then Windows Explorer just "crashes". It simply
disappears
(taskbar, desktop icons), and I can't restart it by ctrl+del+alt like
normal. But other things that were open during the crash carry on as
normal,
like playing mp3s in winamp. I can't pin it down to a particular
action,
though last time it happened it was while searching for files using
Search
Assistant (Start>Search). As it finished the search, the Explorer bar
disappeared. I left it for a bit thinking maybe it would restart on its
own
but it didn't, so I had to reboot.

There are no errors coincidental with the crash in Event Log; there are
no
conflicting devices in Device Manager. I've only just finished
installing
all this stuff on a brand new system. I've tried scanning for spyware,
viruses, used every available Sasser-tool. Nothing. I've also
downloaded
every available patch for SP1. Yes I KNOW about SP2, but frankly the
"10
reasons to have SP2" as prescribed by MS are a joke. I don't need or
want
the damn thing. :P

I'm running XP Home on an AMD XP 64-bit dual-core machine with 2GB DDR
ram,
it aint no case of doing too much.

Cheers
Tim
