I can't understand your attitude to SP2. There are a number of security
fixes as well as other fixes. You might find it fixes your problem You
really should get it. As to your crash look at the software you have loaded
at the time it crashes. Also look at the services (other than Microsoft) and
disable the non Microsoft ones to see if you can track down the component
that's causing the crash. Go to start | run and type msconfig and look at
both the startup tab and the services tab and remove all from the startup
tab. Disable the non Microsoft services. See if the computer is stable and
if so restart a few items at a time until you find the problem. Also run
hijack this which generates a log to see if any malware is causing the
problem. Also look to any toolbars and so on and include them in your
faultfinding. Do you run any registry fixing programs?

Having just used Google, I found an article claming that if you add
anything
other than QuickLaunch to the taskbar, it can crash. I have Control Panel
and the Address Bar added to the bar as well as QuickLaunch...should I
remove them? Seems daft seeing as how I'm only using Explorer like it's
supposed to be used!

Every now and then Windows Explorer just "crashes". It simply disappears
(taskbar, desktop icons), and I can't restart it by ctrl+del+alt like
normal. But other things that were open during the crash carry on as
normal,
like playing mp3s in winamp. I can't pin it down to a particular action,

every available patch for SP1. Yes I KNOW about SP2, but frankly the "10
reasons to have SP2" as prescribed by MS are a joke. I don't need or want
the damn thing. :P

I'm running XP Home on an AMD XP 64-bit dual-core machine with 2GB DDR
ram,
it aint no case of doing too much.
