Re: Windows XP Home Update April 11 - Programs Freeze After

I am just offering an educated guess about the root cause, but if I am
correct, I would point the finger at KB912812.

At http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912812 ... it says

• Compatibility Patch Available (security update 917425)
The Internet Explorer ActiveX update (update 912945), is contained in this
cumulative security update for Windows XP Service Pack 2, for Windows Server
2003 Service Pack 1, for Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, for Windows
Server 2003 x64 Edition family, and for Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack
1 for Itanium-based Systems. With this update, customers can interact with
Microsoft ActiveX controls that are loaded in certain Web pages only after
they manually activate their user interfaces by clicking these interfaces or
by using the TAB key and ENTER keys. To help customers who need more time to
prepare for the update, Microsoft released a Compatibility Patch. After it is
deployed, the Compatibility Patch will temporarily return Internet Explorer
to the way that it used to handle ActiveX controls. This patch will function
until the June cumulative Internet Explorer update is released. Then, the
changes to the way Internet Explorer handles ActiveX controls will be
permanent.
917425

This patch is available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917425/ - if you
download and install this patch and things magically start to work again,
that is your culprit. If it is, you are probably going to have to get updates
for your affected programs (by rights, they should be free) because the MS
patch will expire in June.

If the patch does fix the problem, please report back. I fix computers for a
living and this is likely to raise heck with some of my customers.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I just did a Sys. Restore and then updated 4 of the 7
updates and still have the same problem with programs hanging (not
responding)

KB 908531 Security for XP
KB912812 Security for I.E.
KB911562 Security for XP
KB911565 Win Media Player 10

One of the four above are causing my problem. I can also add Canon's
Zoombrowser EX to the list of programs affected with one of the above
Updates.

Can anyone quickly pinpoint which of the above are likely to cause programs
to hang? Back to a System restore again...this is a pain in the ***!

Thanks,
Bpb

Hi,
I installed these 7 automatic Windows XP weekly updates Wednesday and
after
the update and reboot, two of my most used image programs Corel Paint
Shop
Pro X, and ACDSee both freeze (Not resopnding) when starting up. I did a
System Restore and all was well until today when these same 7 Automatic
Updates were installed with the same results with these two and possibly
other programs. I am about to do another System Restore to get around
this
serious problem.
What did Microsoft dio in these Updates to cause this problem? Which of
the
7 updates is causing this problem?

I had heard that one of the updates changes the way that ActiveX is used
in
conjunction with webpages, and that this will ultimately require web site
programmers to change their page code. If your programs use Internet
Explorer
in the background (too many do...) this could be causing your problem. See
if
you can figure out which update makes this change and uninstall it and see
if
it works.
