Messenger !

I'm running XP Home on my laptop. I've never used MS Messenger and in fact
had uninstalled it, I thought. I use another IM client, when I have to.
Recently, I had to download and install some MS updates and found Messenger
still on there. I went to Control Panel->Add or Remove Programs->Add/Remove
Windows Components and discovered that indeed, Windows thinks I have
uninstalled Messenger. I even tried installing and then uninstalling it
again to no avail.

Now, I know someone here will be able to show me how to finally get rid of
Messenger. I'm also assuming it's appearence after I had uninstalled it was
the work of a later "update". (I suspect net. framework 1 or 2, but I could
be wrong. The installation of Net. framework also made it impossible for me
to use the autologon feature. Since I never needed it before and didn't know
what use I derived from it, I uninstalled both net. framework 1 and 2.) I
still can't enable the autologon even though I downloaded TweakUI. So I
guess I have two problems. Any help? Other than Linux?
