When you buy a computer then you must make sure to get
the software media and licences too. It is not unusual that
the software is worth more than the hardware. Without media
and licences, do you cannot really assert your ownership.

If you do not have these media and if you cannot borrow
them from a friend then you must not format your hard disk,
even though Windows is crashing often and even though
a complete re-installation is probably required. Sorry.

But as I stated, I bought the computer with 98 already installed and do
not
have a 98 disk. My old computer was over 6 years old. How do I go about
it,
then?

Windows XP is an operating system. If the CD + licence you
have is an upgrade then you can still install it on a blank hard
disk. During the installation you will be prompted for your
Win98 installation CD.

MS Office is an application. Older version of MS Office will
run on all current versions of Windows. Newer versions of
MS Office may not run on older versions of Windows. If you
have an upgrade CD + licence from an old version of MS Office
then that old version must already be installed on your PC.

OK, I have Windows XP operating system running on a computer I bought
that
had an old version of 98 already installed. I transfered my operating
system
from one hard drive to a new, larger hard drive. Now I am crashing
often,
and other newsgroup threads all say that it would be best to reinstall
XP.
But since I only have an upgrade version but also have Windows Office
for
Students and Teachers.

I just need to know if I can unistall the XP and install the Office
for
students version. Is the Office Student an operating software package,
or
do
I still need XP loaded?

I got my computer from a now defunct local computer company that had
windows
98 pre-installed by Dell. I got the upgrade for XP and Office on my
own, but
now I am trying to reinstall XP but have a few questions.

1) I'll be breif. Can I just install the Windows Office for
Students?

2) If not, do I need to do a complete reinstall or just a repair?

3) Windows XP disk does not Auto start when inserted, other disks
do.

4) and finally, this is primarly due to not being able to access
Restore
point.

I can be reached on Yahoo at Kseering
