Thanks Bill. I will try your suggestions. I have the screen saver on but
set to 9999. I use it for a password from time to time. I have the latest
video drivers. I have a wired mouse and it is fairly new. This seems to
have happened just in the last 3 or 4 weeks I think for me so I also think
it is some update or software that I installed. But I have installed a lot
since then and narrowing it down would be very difficult. Thanks again.

Kent,
I recently ran into the same problem with my Dell which is similar to
yours. Power and screen saver always worked without a problem, so I don't
know if it was a recent update from Microsoft that caused my problem or a
drive update, etc. Anyway, the only fix I found with my most recent
encounter with this problem was to turn off the screen saver. After
turning off the screen saver, the power option worked again.
I have had this same problem in the past with my Dell and found that
installing the latest video driver helped - I assume you have NVIDIA like
I do. Strangely enough, I found in the past that a weak mouse or keyboard
battery (if your wireless) or a loose connection (if wired) would send a
false signal to the computer indicating a non-idle situation preventing
the monitor from powering off. Hope this helps.

Hi:
Under power options I have my monitor set to turn off every 15 minutes.
It does not turn off unless I go into the power menu and then hit OK.
Any ideas? I have XP SP2 on a Dell Dimension 8400. I don't believe I
have any spyware on my system. I have the usual anti spyware software
including Microsoft's Defender which is running in the background. Thank
you very much, Kent
.
