See if you have the /sos switch enabled in the boot.ini.

/SOS
Causes Windows to list the device drivers marked to load at boot time and
then to display the system version number (including the build number),
amount of physical memory, and number of processors. By default, the
Windows Loader screen only echoes progress dots.

You can do this with the System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe)
Start | Run | Type: msconfig | Click OK |
BOOT.INI tab | UNSelect /SOS | Click Apply | Click OK

You will probably have to reboot.

If /sos was not selected and you did not change anything, click on the
Cancel button to get out of msconfig without having to reboot.

I would imagine that anything that was changed with Smoker can be fixed with
a reg file from Kelly's Korner, an actual registry change or if you have XP
Pro a change in Group Policy. You just need to ask.

Funnily enough I did get rid of it 1st time round for other reasons, but
then I found my "Turn off PC" button at the login screen disappeared. So
i re-installed it and my Turn off button came back, but my text I speak
about in this problem had gone! I didn't want to remove XP Smoker again
in case my Turn off button went away again!

Also I noticed that while your solution works, I now also get strange
messages as well as the standard "Logging off", etc - things like
"Executing <filename>.dll", etc. I didn't have this before.

Get rid of XP Smoker!

can anyone help me get back the text you see during logon? It seems to

I'm talking about the text that says things like "Loading personal
settings" and "logging off" and "saving your settings" and "Windows is
