Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

My laptop crashes everytime I turn it on, it comes to a point where I have to choose between "start normaly" & "start with previously known good settings" and this goes on for about 4 times before Windows XP actualy starts, I'm not an expert to know if it is software, hardware or just a virus causing this to happen, I'm thinking of formatting the harddrive, can someone guide me please......

Explain what you mean by "crashes"? Be specific - any error messages? If so post verbatim. Describe exactly what happens when you start the computer.

Also with the system running turn off automatically restart on system failure. Right click My Computer | Properties | Advanced | Startup and Recovery - Settings. Under System Failure untic the box for "Automatically restart. Ok out and reboot. If the system stops with a blue screen write down and post the message on that screen verbatim.

Also check the Event Viewer for errors at the time the system problem occurs. Go to Start | All Programs | Administrative Tools | Event Viewer. Look in the System log for any entries marked with a red "X" at the time of the problem. Same with the Application Log. Post that information here too.

What happened before this problem occurred? Any hardware or software changes? Have you done a thorough scan for malware using a combination of programs in safe mode? Here are some links with info on dealing with malware.
