We had our computer worked on to have more space on our C drive. As the tech was backing up everything it crashed and we lost everything. Unfortunately the one cd we did not have (it came installed on the computer) is the Windows XP. The tech told me he used a different xp from another sony computer since we lost ours. Now, I cannot download anything from microsoft b/c of a validation failure. The xp product key is on the back of the computer, my computer is over 2 yrs old so sony didn't offer and good advice. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Signed,
Extremely frustrated!!
Assuming that the computer was serviced by the selling OEM
and that the reload of Windows XP constitutes a bona fide
repair by the OEM, then download an utility such as Belarc
(http://www.belarc.com) to ascertain the product key that
was used by the technician for the re-install and use it for
the validation. But if the servicing was not done by the
original OEM (or SONY), then all bets are off; it is the
repair shop's problem to sort out.
