Microsoft XP service pack 2 - Internet problem

Hi there,

I have recently re-installed windows on my laptop.
I then updated to service pack 2. (I downloaded the file for update on
several computer, rather than use the automatic update, which doesn't
seem to work anyway!)

I had to install it in safe mode, as the exe file wouldn't launch
otherwise.

It installed fine, and all application were running absolutely fine,
apart from Internet Explorer.

Everytime I connect, the pages load up really slowly (I mean really
slowly!) and after anything between 30 sec and 2 min, I lose my
connection altogether.
Now the funny thing is that MSN messenger still runs, and the icon
indicating the status of my connection (bottom right on the desktop
task bar) indicates that I am still connected.

I have tried several things

netsh interface ip reset resetlog.txt
disabling windows firewall
changing settings on the firewall

Nothing works! In the end I have had to uninstall service pack 2 and
everything is back to normal.

Can anyone explain to me where I am going wrong or what I should do
when I try to install SP2 again?

This is just driving me mad!

Thanks

Julien
