Daily occurence of Event 1000, Application Error, webupdate.exe -- how to troubleshoot

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

This is a WinXPP SP2 machine in a workgroup. The events occur once daily
(occasionally twice daily), but at no predictable time. The only thing I can
say about the times is that they are hours when the machine is likely in use.

Have googled web and newsgroups, eventid.net and technet to no avail. Would
greatly appreciate any suggestions about how to troubleshot this.
