Go here...
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_v.htm#volume
Scroll up just a little bit to see...
Volume Control - The volume icon does not appear in the notification area
(system tray)
and follow all the troubleshooting steps.
Make sure that you register stobject.dll. I.e. regsvr32 stobject.dll
You may need netvol.reg.
Listed as Restore Volume and Net Icon in the Notification Area on that page
or here...
320. Restore Volume/Net Icon to Notification Area
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
stobject.dll is used to provide functionality to the Notification Area.
stobject.dll also has the icons for Volume Control, the regular one and the
muted one. stobject.dll is the Systray shell service object.
You can actually see the Volume Control icons from stobject.dll this way...
Right click any folder that you do not have customized
Click Properties
Click the Customize tab
Click the Change Icon button
Change the Look for icons in the file box from
%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll
to
%SystemRoot%\system32\stobject.dll
Hit your Enter key
The two Volume Control icons are the bottom two on the left.

Windows XP has a known issue with the volume control not appearing in the
task tray. I am aware of all of the fixes including reinstalling the
sndvol32.exe in the system32 folder; and clicking on the "show volume
control in task tray" checkbox in the Audio applet. None of these are
necessarily sure fixes for the problem. I think a better fix would be to
add a registry startup entry that independently loads the volume control
icon in the windows task tray; however, I am unable to locate the
executable file. Do you know what's the name of this volume control file
in windows? Obviously it is NOT sndvol32.exe because that loads the
volume control panel if executed. I am looking for the file/command to
load the volume control icon in the task tray at startup. Thanks.
P.S. I found a great program that loads a volume control in the task
tray. To download this utility, click on
http://glorysoft.omsk.ru/vlt_download.html and select the latest version
to install. It works great and you can always rely on having volume
control in your task tray. Basically this was the only alternative fix I
can find to work around the Windows XP glitch.
