Open Volume control(doubleclick the speaker in the notification area) and check for Mute.

ok, how do I resolve this? The pc was working fine one day now all of a sudden I have no sound at all, all advice much appreciated. R

Nope, that would be caused by no sound adapter drivers being installed or the sounds being muted.

Will this resolve the fact that I have no sound at all on the pc?

I'm not techie, but using WXP and antivirus (AVG) picked this up:
system volume
infomration/-restore{OFE9A9E5-E452-4544-8D90-1D3885E27-E66}\RP295\a0021551.exe
says trojan horse generic, my sound does not work at all, what can I do to
rectify this?
Thanks

You need to clean up your system, start by D/Ling and running these apps from safe mode
sysclean http://www.securityworm.com/software/homepc/antivirus/sysclean-package.html
smitfraud http://www.derkeiler.com/Newsgroups/microsoft.public.security.virus/2005-10/0059.html
Ad-AwareSE http://www.tucows.com/preview/236049
Once you are clean and are sure your machine is working correctly turn off system restore, reboot re enable it then create a clean restore point.
