Also, when using the PC, I keep getting a pop up telling me that my system is about to die a drastic death unless I go to a website and pay for registry repair. (different URL every time). Have downloaded a free registry repair and it seems to have repaired a lot, but still getting this pop up. How do I tell if it's genuine and that I really do have problems.

These popups are fraudulent. Any "free registry repair" you were directed to by the pop up may have compromised your system security further. Download and run Ad-Aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ and or Spybot - Search & Destroy http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10122137.html. for best results the first time run these utilities in safe mode. There are other similar utilities I haven't tried.

You WILL want to run an anti virus scan with up to date definitions too.

Most people don't need the Windows Messenger service some of these sites use. The Windows Messenger service will normaly be turned off by the installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2, but can be turned off manually. Note that Windows Messenger and Windows INSTANT Messenger are two completely different things.

Lastly, downloaded a free 60 day trial for office 2003 pro. Downloaded OK, but when I click on exe. and it starts extracting the files, it tells me that there's been a fatal error. Should I call 999 or just throw the PC out of the window.

You might be able to get more responses for that in one of the Office forums.

Have lifeache.
