Also try fn+f7 or fn+f8,cant remember exactly which one, to fill the screen.

Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop.
XP Home Edition Version 2002 SP2.
Under System Properties, Performance Options, Visual Effects, "Let Windows
choose what's best" is checked.
Under Control Panel, Display, settings, resolution is 1280x1024. Clicking
advanced shows large size DPI (125%).
My physical screen is completely filled with the normal windows desktop
screen. I close the laptop and it goes to sleep. Later I return and open
the laptop. The user select sign on screen appears. It does not fill the
screen. There is about 3/4 inch of black across the top and bottom and
about
1.1/4 inches on each side that is not used. All settings described are
the
same yet I have lost about 1/3 of the viewing area on the screen which
makes
text very small and hard to read. The only way I have found to get out of
this situation is a restart of the computer. I do not have to change
anything, just restart and it comes up with a full screen.
I have found lots of posts concerning problems with screen resolution but
nothing quite like this. If anyone can help, I'll dance at your wedding.
