Re: Change to User's Name on Stand Alone PC WXP Pro SP2

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi Edna,

Honestly, I think you may be over complicating what should be a moderately
easy procedure. Go to the control panel/users and delete any Edna accounts.
Start over. First, simply logon to the owner account as you normally do.
Then go to the users applet and create the desired Edna account with
administrator privileges. Close the users applet, click start/logoff. This
should give you the welcome screen logon. Log into the new Edna account,
this will create the needed file structure. Once fully loaded, logoff this
account as well.

Now you are at the welcome screen again. Here is where the procedure differs
according to your version. If you have WinXP Pro, hit ctrl+alt+delete twice
to get the Win2000 style logon box and type in administrator (and any needed
password for this account). If you have WinXP Home you need to restart in
Safe mode per my previous instructions and click on the administrator logon.
Now that you are into the administrator account, you can use the user
profile copy steps outlined in the article. Logoff the administrator account
when completed (and restart the system if you had to go to safe mode for
these steps). Log into the new Edna account, make sure everything is where
you want it and start using the account. Don't remove the old owner account
until you are comfortable with the new one.

Rick I followed your instuctions. I have my Edna Acct but it's an
Administrator acct. I now have TWO Edna Administrator accts. At least
that's the view in the User Accts window. I had no choice. The Window
said
You must create at least one computer administrator acct before u can
create
other accts. Administrator was enabled and I couldn't disable it. In
the
lower half of the window it said Pick a Task Change an acct, Create a New
Acct, Change the way Users log on or off.
Lower still was Edna Administator and another Edna Administrator.
I couldn't go back or forward without changing or picking an acct. I
chose
to change the picture. I made a choice but couldn't go forward - it took
me
back to the previous window, choose another picture, make a choice then
back
again. I must have done this 4 times.

There was no way out of that window. I finally clicked the upper rt
corner
to get out. I've got notes of each action but it's too much to relay
here.
Actually this is basically all I did. Created another Admin Acct and
chose
and changed the picture a few times. I made no other settings.

I thought I could keep my present desktop while being in the new Edna
Acct.
It has a file struture but I won't move any files until I get your
instructions if this is OK.

I made one acct in caps so I do at least know which acct I created.

When u make a new acct does that mean u sacrifice your icons and desktop
if
u choose to use that as your main acct?

I'm back in the Owner's Acct right now and I'd like this to be my Edna
acct.
Is that not possible? Geez what a morning. I was so scared I'd never
see
my Desktop and icons again. I guess, if I want to work in this new Edna
Acct, I won't see them again. All my settings and everything will have to
be
adjusted. Everything is lost - is it? If so, it's not worth the trouble.
I
think I might go back to being the Owner until the next format. I'll see
what you have to advise. Thx

In Users Accts I have the two Edna Administrator accts.
In WExplorer I have as I had before, Administrator, All Users, Default,
Owner, plus the Edna Acct.

Hi Rick, I was hoping u were around. Sorry WXP Pro SP2
When I click Start\Log off I get a little Log Off Window
"Are u Sure u Want to Log Off?"
If I click Yes, from what u say, " ... and go back to the login screen?"

Is this a Logon window that's going to appear? (You lost me here)
Then in whatever is in front of me I CAD twice to get an older logon
window
in which I type Administrator as the User to get in the AdminAcct.

OK after I understand that step, THEN, on the way in again.... I'll type
that path but what IF I'm in the Owner Acct ... then what can I do to get
into the Edna Acct - like do I just keep typing that path until the Edna
acct
appears? LOL Patience Rick.

Hi Edna,

1. Shut Down and Boot up. I'm told to "Logon" to the Admin Acct -
Note: I don't "Logon". I merely go right into Windows. Is this OK?

Yes, this is ok, but what it means is that you are going straight into
your
"owner" account. If this is WinXP Pro, click start/logoff and go back
to the
login screen, then hit ctrl+alt+delete twice to get an older logon box
where
you can type in administrator as the user. If this is WinXP Home, you
must
restart in Safe mode by hitting F8 during the restart at the point
where the
initial power on ends and before Windows begins to load. Administrator
will
be one of the logon options. You need to be in this account to do the
file
moves.

2. Go to User Accts: Create my New Acct: Edna with Full
Permissions.

3. Shut Down and Boot as always, straight into Windows ...Note void
of
any
"Logon".. Is this OK?
This to create the new Edna Acct file structure.

Again, you need to know which account is actually loading here. Click
start/run, type %userprofile% and click ok. The folder it opens to
should be
C:\Documents and Settings\Edna, if it opens to C:\Documents and
Settings\Owner, then you are not in the right account.

4. Under Docs & Settings I will now see an Acct for Edna.

Click on "Edna" and see that there is a file structure below this
level.

5. Move my files & folders from the old "Owner" Acct I was using to
my
newly created Edna Acct. Can I use "Sendto" to move the files?

No, you can't use send to. A simply copy/paste is sufficient per the
article, but for this step to work correctly you *must* be logged on as
administrator, not as Owner or as Edna.

5. Move OE Address Book and Folders per KB811151

6. If I remove Full Permissions from the old Owner Acct can I assume
that
it will dissappear from the C:\Sharing & Security Window?

No, it will still appear, you're just changing permissions.

Question: Can I DELETE the folder under WExplorer\Docs & Settings
after
I'm
confident all is well with the newly created Acct?

If you delete the "Owner" account via the users applet and choose as
well to
delete the profile, it should be removed for you. Otherwise, yes you
can
delete any remaining remnants of the profile once the account is
deleted.

In fear of an error, would someone pls confirm or correct my intended
action:

I've stalled creating this Acct being too embarrassed to ask this
"Logon"
question but decided I prefer to look dumb vs trashing my computer.
Thx

"Rick "Nutcase" Rogers" wrote:

Hi,

"Edna", the computer administrator, is probably the "Owner" account
created
for your use by the manufacturer. You can change the display name,
just
not
the actual user folder under Documents and Settings. This is why you
need
to
create an account specifically named "Edna" in order to have a user
folder
by that name. Administrator is a system fallback account, AllUsers
is for
settings common to all users of a particular machine. Default User
is a
template for new users created by the manufacturer, Local Service is
also
a
system default. Guest is for anyone who you happen to allow to use
the
machine without having to have them create a new account. These are
all
part
of the design for a true user account platform, while it may not
seem
important in a home user setting, it is critical in a workplace
environment
and WinXP was designed to support both.

I haven't started this yet but ... In User Accts I am the
Administrator:
1. Edna
Computer Administrator

2. Guest
Guest Acct is Off That's all there is on the User Acct
Window.

Question: Does this make any difference to these instructions?

Question: Do all five of these accts:
1. Administrator, 2. All Users, 3. Default User, 4. Local
Service,
5.
Owner acct,
oh and Network Service,
Install by DEFAULT or was the "Owner" Acct made for me when my
computer
was
assembled?

Geez IMO all these Accts baffle the "one only" User. We should
have a
choice as to which Accts we want installed. u can tell I haven't
taken
the
time to learn about them. Complaining is easier.

Hi Edna,

The names of the user profile folders cannot be changed. To have
an
"Edna"
folder you would need to logon to the administrator account and
create
a
new
user acccount named "Edna". Then you can copy the stuff from the
account
you've been using into it.

Note that one step not listed in the article is that after
creating
the
destination profile you must log into it once first to create the
necessary
file structure before you do the copy procedure.

my name. Pls advise which one is advisable to change. My

wireless
connected to my Notebook both Owner used only so the same name
will
be
on
both computers. Thx.
