I was working on dialup for ages and it was beautifully giving
that double window icon in the systray.
recently, I have migrated to broadband. The company has provided
(rental) an 220 BX Beetle ADSL/ 24 modem, which is connected
through my lan card.
I am unable to get its double window icon in systray. Could
someone please tell me how to get it there. It is giving
information like, total connect time, total bytes sent/
received, etc. which are quite helpful.
--------
My LAN's double window icon is indeed appearing in the systray,
but that is giving some "packets transferred" details which I
don't know how to convert to bytes.
I don't have to connect to net. It seems to be always connected.
when I switch on the modem, all its diodes blink for some time,
and then it becomes on-line, and then, when I run any program,
it can access net.
---------
The modem has usb option also, but I am using xp as well as 98se
and the modem engineer has said that 1. usb connection is
problematic in 98, 2. lan connection is much more reliable.
Is it correct, or are they just telling me the easy way?
If you have your network card setup to show an icon inn the system tray when
connected.. you are done.
Control Panel --> Network Connections --> Probably "Local Area Connection",
right-click on it and choose properties --> General tab --> Show icon in
notification area when connected
If you have normal broadband - you *are* always connected to the internet as
long as the computer is on and you have nothing setup to disable your
network card/enable it or manually power on/off the modem. My suggestion to
you - purchase a Cable Modem/DSL router from a local computer retailer and
connect it.. It will provide you with an extra layer of protection and if
you get a wired/wireless one - expandability for the future.
