Since your friend built your system it is very hard to diagnose the issues that you are experiencing. Could be just about anything from wrong or reversed pin connections to faulty system build.
I strongly suggest that you bring your system to a professional shop so they can physically look at what was installed wrong(hardware)

Hi All,.
Everytime I try to access my DVDRW drive my system locks up and I have to
use the power button to turn the system off. Plus a friend built my system
as such I another DVD drive that shows up under the My Computer applet, but I
don't have the phyiscal drive. Also I can't access this one either. Here's
my system info:
Processor: Intel Family 15 Model 33.2,BIOS: 42302e31 Award Modular B, HD
76.33GB, Memory 368MB, Video 1280x960 in 32 bit Color, Intel 8, Windows XP
Pro 5.1 Build 2600.
