To be fair, that's what everyone said about Microsoft and Internet Explorer. You know, as soon as they run Netscape and other browsers out of business, they'll start charging for it. Well, they never have.

However, I remember a company that did exactly that. It was called Netscape. If you've been around as long as I have, you'll know that Netscape started as a free browser competing against my favorite mosaic browsers. Once Netscape put them all out of business, it began charging $50 for its browser. Of course, that's when I switched to IE even though it did not have anywhere near the same features as Navigator at the time.

AFAIK, the only thing that Microsoft once offered for free that they now charge for is Outlook. I don't think they put even a single mail client out of business in the process.

Time will tell. I say they will charge. And, you had to have Windows to get IE so it wasn't free. Even though Netscape wanted 50 bucks, it wasn't necessary to pay it to get it as you should well know. The only reason Netscape became unpopular was because AOL bought it. Same thing for ICQ.

I have to disagree. Netscape became unpopular because Internet Explorer 4.1 kicked the tar out of Navigator in terms of performance and Netscape's response was to hire lawyers instead of smarter software developers.

So it is said. I used Netscape until AOL bought it.

ICQ became unpopular because it was a security nightmare (even compared to AIM) and it had the stupid ICQ "number" instead of a simple to remember handle. "What's your ICQ number?" "Uh, I don't know, try 28052874093450580920883039... PHAW!!!"

I'm glad no one uses ICQ anymore.

ICQ was great until AOL bought it. THEN the weird messages started appearing out of nowhere.

Oh, and you didn't need to know the number to find someone.
