I am on another computer so I can't copy and paste the events, I will try to
recreate them. I did not get a chance to get the stop code.

There are no yellow question marks in Device Manager.
My files were scanned and verified as digitally signed. It didn't show a
list or mention drivers.

We need copies of reports / error messages.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click
on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties,
Advanced, StartUp and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck
box before Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

There will also be Error Reports in Event Viewer. Please post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties. Hardware,
Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What
drivers
are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not checked.

I don't know if this is the proper newsgroup for this or not because I
have never had any experience with this particular problem. The problem
is with my laptop, Compaq Presario V2100, 512 RAM, AMD Athlon processor.
Last week my Windows XP got a corrupt Windows/System32/Config/System file
and Windows would not start up. I did not want to reinstall XP because of
losing all my stuff but I finally did last night. After installing
Windows and drivers. I went to Microsoft updates to get all the updates
needed for it. There were 36 updates and it got through downloading 21 of
them and the computer did a "dump of physical memory" and restarted. It
came up and said it had just recovered from a serious error and I sent an
error message to Microsoft. It came back and said something about my hard
drive (sorry, I don't remember the exact wording). Now today, Windows
will start up, but every time I go to try the updates again, it goes into
this "dump of physical memory" and restarts the minute it starts scanning
for updates. With this very limited information, could someone please tell
me if this is a Windows problem or a hard drive problem? Do I need a new
hard drive? Thanks in advance for any help offered.
