Re: HELP PLEASE

Have you managed to resolve this one yet?

I wouldn't try to configure manual ips initially. Just leave everything on automatic.

The basic procedure is fairly simple and shouldn't require bothering too much about ip addresses and default gateways.....

Run the network wizard on both machines
Disable the firewall on the lan connection on both computers
Configure the internet connection to allow sharing, if necessary (via Network Connections)
Reboot, if necessary

and you should be there.

If you're having problems with that then check you have default settings for services (ie you've not disabled any vital ones)[Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services]. Also, sometimes the vestiges of 3rd party programs can also conflict eg other installed firewalls, so it may be best to fully uninstall / disable those first.

since you're testing with a cross over, try disabling the firewalls for now, set manual ips, and see if they can ping each other?

Tks for the advice....... how do I set manual IPs ?

With the router before it set me as 198.168.0.2 and the wife was .3

I have since done ipconfig on both computers and have the results...... rather than me broadcast it all ........ what should I be looking for?

WIFE - connection specific dns suffix......... mshome.net

MINE - connection specific dns suffix....... BLANK
           ip address............. 192.168.0.1
           default gateway..... BLANK

the other is ppp adapter bt yahoo.......... dns........ BLANK

gateway is the same as ip address.

Have pinged both pcs and get full replies back........ So should I just run the network setup wizard on BOTH MACHINES manually, have firewalls OFF and the internet not connected....... then re-start and see what comes up?

This must seem so basic to people in here, but am really confused ove ip addresses, gateways etc etc........ apologies to everyone!

Thank you

Steve
