Astronauts, We Salute You!

20 years ago today, we lost our first Space Shuttle.

I was on my way to work at Boeing in Bellevue, Washington,
working on a top secret project which-- it turned out-- was
the Space Station.

I was some 10 minutes from the office when I turned on my
car's radio for some music. I just so happened to pick up a
broadcast of the launch, "One of the prettiest ever!" they
were saying.

Then, as I reveled in the audio cheers, there was an "Oh! My
GOD! Did you see THAT?"

As I started to ask, "What's he talking about?"

the broadcaster said, "The Challenger just exploded, 1
minute into liftoff!"

--

When I walked into the office, some 100 cubicles, some
unseen person in a cubicle yelled, "Has anyone heard
anything about the Space Shuttle? I heard it was supposed to
go up today!"

Another voice yelled, "Haven't heard anything. Are you sure
it was going up today?"

I was elected to bear the bad news as the office fell
silent. No one else had heard...

"I just heard it on the radio!" I yelled to the entire
office. It launched about 10 minutes ago, and blew up!"

Family, Friends, Loved Ones, Admirers of the Challenger
Astronauts:

We Salute You!

20 years ago today, we lost our first Space Shuttle.

And for those old enough to remember the day our beloved
John Fitzgerald Kennedy was shot...

Those two events changed our entire planet!

Astronaut friends, family, loved ones, fellow astronauts,
admirers...

Our thoughts and prayers are with you this day!

For those of us who happen to have been part of the Space
Program in some way, we do know...

You have left this world a better place than you found it!
