First off, go to Netgear's web site and download the latest
driver for your adapter.

Check the label on your adapter and make sure you download the
driver for the correct version.
Once you've installed the latest driver, logon to your router's
web interface from your main computer. Consult the
documentation that came with your router for how this is done.
Once you've logged on, look for a section that will allow you
to change the wireless settings. You want to change the channel
that the router uses for wireless connections from the default
channel to channel 1. If you're not able to do this, post back
with details for your router (make and model #).
Make sure you're using Infrastructure Mode.
If you're still not able to connect, you might want to contact
Netgear's support at 1-888- Netgear. You can also contact them
via email. They have their own support forums which you may
find helpful.

FYI #1, a firewall should not prevent you from establishing
communications between your wireless adapter and the router. If
this was a firewall problem, you'd be able to connect to the
router (the network connection icon would be green) but you'd
have a problem connecting to the internet.
FYI #2, after a power failure, it's usually a good idea to
leave the computers off and disconnect the power cables from
the modem and router. Once the power comes back on you plug the
cable back into the modem first. Once the modem's up and
running, reconnect power to the router. Finally, restart the
computers.
